Biking and Cycling Eyewear

enhance your ride!

biking eyewearHard core cyclists worth their weight will tell you they depend on their eyes to keep them safe and add enjoyment to the ride. Eyewear specifically designed for cycling keeps flying dirt, debris and wind from your eyes while you’re speeding through bike paths and lanes.

Specialized cycling glasses should also shield you from ultraviolet radiation and the sun. Look for cycling sunglasses that increase contrast to help you see pot holes, rocks, and other road conditions better.

Many sports eyewear frames now feature interchangeable lenses to allow you to adjust your eyewear to changing light conditions for those long treks. Lenses are available in both prescription and non-prescription and should be chosen for your specific biking needs.

Biking or cycling with inappropriate eyewear can not only cause strain and fatigue, it can be dangerous. When searching for the perfect eyewear for cycling, keep these things in mind:

  • Eyewear with a wrap-style frame protects your eyes from wind and flying debris.
  • The perfect fit is essential, so plan to try on several styles. Your eyewear should stay in place even when you are sweating.
  • Frames that feature vents or air holes in the frame or lens prevent fogging.
  • Your prescription or non-prescription lens should provide 100-percent ultraviolet (UV) protection from the sun. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause vision loss. If you bike for long periods at a time, find a lens that protects against UVA, UVB, UVC and blue rays.
  • Lens color or polarized lenses minimize glare. Glare contributes to fatigue and reduces visibility. Brown or amber lenses are the best color for high glare and improve your depth perception. Brown, photochromic lenses - offer best contrast and adapt to changing light. You may need several lens colors. Either choose multiple frames to adjust to changing light conditions or pick eyewear with removable lenses for low-light conditions. Yellow lenses provide good contrast during low-light conditions and green is a good all-purpose color for varying light conditions.
  • If you’re a hard core cyclist, invest in a pair of goggles if you frequently ride in rainy conditions or if you’re into high-speed racing.
